Thermal paper is specially coated with a chemical which reacts to heat that comes from scanning (of receipts, tickets) and running through a machine (like train tickets) to ensure that the paper can function properly. Usually, the coating will turn black when heated, but coatings that turn blue or red are sometimes used. While an open heat source, such as a flame, can discolor the paper, a fingernail swiped quickly across the paper will also generate enough heat from friction to produce a mark.
It is used in thermal printers, particularly in inexpensive or lightweight devices such as adding machines, cash registers, and credit card terminals. The surface of the paper is coated with a solid-state mixture of dye and a suitable matrix; a combination of a fluoran leuco dye for example. When the matrix is heated above its melting point, the dye reacts with the acid, shifts to its colored form, and the changed form is then conserved in a metastable state when the matrix solidifies back quickly enough.

Thermal Printers use thermal paper, its most common application is in the fax machines to produce fax documents and printouts.
High quality pictures, images and technical printouts derived from thermal printing in specific fields like healthcare are highly accurate; these include data printed from ultrasounds, prescription labels, electrocardiograms, etc.
Point of Sale Terminals and Applications in retail businesses for printing receipts, bills, etc. generally use thermal paper. These include grocery stores, bank ATMs, gas stations, etc. where speed is essential and an accurate service is also required.
Businesses that require super-efficient, clear, accurate and high volume prints like lottery systems, ticketing centers, etc. also use thermal paper.
Thermal Paper is used to print amusement center tickets or tags, cinema or movie tickets, play tickets, etc. due to the advantage of the printed image being easily scanned and clear.
Dispatch labels for shipments, along with their contents, barcodes, and any other relevant data are printed on thermal paper as they can be scanned effectively.
Bank account statements, medical documents that have to be stored for a long time, medicine bottle prescriptions, etc. are printed on thermal paper as the paper is durable and print is retained for a long time.
